Yuko Takeuchi (1980–2020), star of “Miss Sherlock,” “Ring”

Yuko Takeuchi was a Japanese actress known for roles including the title character in the HBO Asia/Hulu series “Miss Sherlock.”

Notable roles

One of Takeuchi’s first roles was in “Ring” (1998), the classic Japanese horror film that was remade in the U.S. as “The Ring.” Takeuchi played one of the earliest victims of a cursed videotape. She became well known on Japanese TV for shows including “Asuka” (1999), “Queen of Lunch” (2002), and “Pride” (2004). Her movies include “Be With You” (2004), “Creepy” (2016), and “The Inerasable” (2016). In the west, Takeuchi had a recurring role in the 2009 ABC series “FlashForward.” “Miss Sherlock,” debuting on HBO and Hulu in 2018, starred Takeuchi as detective Sara “Sherlock” Shelly Futaba in the first major Sherlock Holmes adaptation to star two women. Takeuchi also dubbed the voice of Joy in the Japanese version of “Inside Out” and the voice of the younger Rose in the Japanese version of “Titanic.”
