Ollie Herrington Obituary

ODESSA - "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful ones." Psalm 116:15 (NRSV) On March 11, 2021, God welcomed his faithful servant, Jack Herrington, to join Him in heaven. He passed away peacefully at home in Odessa, Texas.

Visitation will be at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, 4635 Oakwood Dr., Odessa, Texas on Thursday, March 18, 2021 from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 2021 at Second Baptist Church, 711 E. 17th Street, Odessa, Texas. The service will also be live streamed on the Second Baptist Church Facebook page. Pastor Jackie Brem will be officiating.

Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 6801 East Business 20, Odessa, Texas.

Survivors include wife Martha Baker Herrington; sister Shirley Ann Dees; children Scott Herrington (Sarah), Don Herrington (Becky) and Rick Herrington (Laurie); step-children Tracey Baker Bailey (Les) and Katye Baker Bevers (Bruce); grandchildren, nieces, nephew, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Predeceased include parents Ollie O. Herrington and Ruth E. Herrington; wife Edna Smith Herrington; brother George Hugh Herrington.

The oldest of three children, Jack was born to Ruth Elizabeth and Ollie Oscar Herrington on February 22, 1928 in Tuscola, Texas, Taylor County. He attended Tuscola High School. After high school, Jack enlisted in the Navy serving in the Navy Seabees ("CAN DO!") Upon his honorable discharge he attended Arlington State College.

He later met, fell in love, then married Edna Smith on March 12, 1949 in Ranger, Texas. Edna passed away in 1991. They were married 47 years. Some years later, Jack again found true love with Martha Baker, a member of his church, Second Baptist. They married on March 29, 2002, married for just short of 20 years.

Moving to Odessa in 1952 for work in the oil industry, Jack worked as a sales and operations manager for Roebling Wire Rope, CF&I Steel, and Stoehr Wire Rope.

Jack was actively involved in the life and ministries of Second Baptist Church as a deacon and church treasurer. His greatest joy was teaching his 3rd grade Sunday School class for 50 years, helping to mold and influence the hearts and minds of children for Christ.

Jack has been described as a Godly man, a man of integrity, character, quiet strength, and quick wit; committed and loyal to his family and his church; generous, kind, and gentle. He was an avid, daily Bible reader.

Jack Herrington's body has quit working. He is now in heaven with his Lord. But Jack Herrington lives on in the lives of his family, his Sunday School kids, his co-workers, and the countless other lives he touched through 93 well-lived years.

This friendly, godly man served the Lord so faithfully. He taught me in Sunday School many years ago. And even though I moved away I would always make a point of talking to him when I visited Second. And then my daughter Cassie also became a part of that ritual same ritual to go look for Mr. Herrington when we were at Second. He definitely has left a wonderful legacy.

Oh how I loved Jack. He was so kind and loving, always had a treat for us each Sunday as a kid. He was funny and would play games with us in Sunday School and then be stern to get our attention and teach about the love of God. My childhood memories have him plastered all over my mind, so thankful for his life and his legacy.
