Daniel Daly Obituary

Daniel William Daly, III
1942-2021
Daniel William Daly, III passed away on January 15, 2021 in Houston, Texas.
Dan was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania on September 9, 1942, he was the eldest son of the late Daniel William Daly Jr. and Rita Johnston Daly. Dan had a lifelong Catholic education. He graduated in 1960 from Gilmour Academy in Ohio and received his BS in 1964 from College of the Holy Cross, a Jesuit liberal arts college in Worcester, Massachusetts and the oldest Catholic college in New England. He subsequently attended law school at The University of Oklahoma and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1967. After law school, Dan worked for the Internal Revenue Service as an Estate Tax Attorney and then as an Advanced Underwriter for American General Insurance Company. In 1972 Dan joined Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Johnson & Williams, becoming a Partner and Co-head of the Estate Section. In 1988, he launched the Houston branch of Jenkens & Gilchrist, P.C. as the Managing Attorney. Dan joined Brown McCarroll, L.L.P., as a partner in 1991. Since 2006, he has practiced law with his longtime friend, Ned Hartline, at Oaks, Hartline, & Daly L.L.P.
Dan would light up a room with his larger than life personality and positive attitude. He loved to entertain with friends and travel the world with the love of his life, Paula, especially to Paris. He lived life to the fullest and never met a stranger. Dan loved spending time with his family and was an exceptional storyteller who loved to brag about his grandchildren. He also loved history and football, especially the Longhorns, and could often be found relaxing at home with a football game on tv and a good book in his hands. Dan was a kind and generous man who will be missed by many.
Dan is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Paula Muecke Daly, his three children and their spouses - Elizabeth Daly Valdes and her husband Oscar, William Daly and his wife Elizabeth, and Sara Daly Edgecomb and her husband Clark, all of Houston, Texas; his step children Paige Perrin and her husband Matthew Kenny, David Perrin, Andrew Perrin and his wife Kristen; his three siblings, Marcia McAndrew and her husband Jim, David Daly and his wife Shirley, Tom Daly and his wife Abbe; and nine grandchildren Avery Valdes, Erin Valdes, Sean Daly, Ryan Daly, Wyatt Edgecomb, Luke Edgecomb, Marshal Edgecomb, Eloise Perrin and Clare Kenny.
Friends are invited to a visitation at Bradshaw Carter, 1734 W. Alabama St., from five until eight o'clock in the evening, with a Rosary starting at half past six o'clock in the evening, on Wednesday, January 20th. A funeral mass will be held at half past ten o'clock in the morning, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer, on Thursday, January 21st. The family will have a private burial at Glenwood Cemetery following Mass.
Memorial contributions, if desired, can be made in memory to The American Heart Association, St. Anne Catholic Church or St. Thomas Catholic High School.

Not sure what to say?

I only found out in February 2023 that my friend and mentor Dan Daily had passed in 2021. I´m glad to have gotten this notice today and to be able to continue to remember Dan on the anniversary of his death. Dan was a great lawyer, and could make everyone laugh with his sense of humor. My sympathy to Dan´s family who I know remember him every day!

I just learned today about Dan's passing! I practiced with Dan at Chamberlain & Hrdlicka, Jenkins & Gilchrist and finally at Brown McCarroll before moving to CA in 1993. Dan was a mentor, a joy to work with and a friend. To Paula, I am so sorry! He was a remarkable man and he did love you dearly. Claudia Sangster

I am heartbroken for Dan's family and friends. He and my late father, Rusty Ross, literally talked to each other in person or on the phone for at least 50 years. Rusty considered Dan his brother from another mother in many ways. They must be telling their shared stories to each other again. It makes me smile to think of them with angle wings. My best to Betsy, Billy, Sara and Paula. I'll always remember Dan as smart as a whip and fun loving at the same time! Much love to you all, Amy

He was a great friend. I came home as a baby in his baby basket. We shared many memories together all through our young years. His parents and mine were dear friends. Sorry to hear of his loss.

My sympathies to the Daly family at your loss. I am a Holy Cross classmate of Dan's and was his roommate in senior year. He was a great roommate, a fun guy, partied more than he studied, smashed the front of my Triumph, and was a brilliant skier. We shared many enjoyable trips to Vermont with Jerry Frank, Jack Grady, Tom Hennessey and others. Dan needed to fill out his senior yearbook page with activities other than parties so as Senior Editor of the Yearbook, I put him on the Yearbook staff and put him in the Western Pa. Club just to add some items. He was the only member of the club (which did not exist) and nobody ever found out. I have happy memories of a happy-go-lucky fun guy and for that I am grateful. Thank you Dan, Rest in Peace.

Dan was an incredible mentor to his clients. His storytelling included teaching his clients, like me, about probate and estate tax law. I regret missing opportunities in the last months to interact with him. He has been a big personality in my life, had a great positive impact on legal matters for me, my daughter, and my husband, and I will always remember him and already miss him. My condolences to his family and firm members.
